MOTHER’S DAY: Celebrating our caregivers

54% of Brits say the pandemic has made them realise how much they appreciate their mum.

Hopefully you have remembered that this Sunday it is Mother's Day. In a survey by card retailer Thoughful, 54% of Brits say the pandemic has made them realise how much they appreciate their mum. Deborah James is a Mum of two who also lives with cancer and she gave her experience of being a mother over the last year.

This Mother’s Day, mums want to be treated with quality time (59%), a card (42%) and a home-cooked meal (40%) over all else.

Deborah, who lives with cancer, believes that Mother’s Day should also be a day to celebrate the NHS. Research suggests others feel the same way. Almost four in five (78%) say they are even more appreciative of the NHS because of the pandemic, seeing what staff have gone through to help us all, and two thirds (68%) feel the NHS has played a motherly, caring role over the last year.

Of course, not everyone will be able to spend the day with their mum as we remain under lockdown restrictions. It will add to the total number of celebrations missed which research from Krispy Kreme say is at 737 million since the pandemic began. Katherine Templar-Lewis, a happiness and wellbeing expert, offers advice for those of us who will not be able to see their mum in person, saying the key is to smile.
