CATCH UP ON EDUCATION: As ministers look at ways of maximising term time, there’s a warning from Save the Children

 

It’s been a turbulent 12 months - not least for pupils and their education.

An average of 95 days of classroom learning have been missed due to covid, with Save the Children suggesting 82% of children claimed that there had been some positives to lockdown, but as you’ll see, catching up by not be so easy.

In the budget, chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the £20 uplift in universal credit would be extended by 6 months - but save the children want Number 10 to go further.

The charity have also welcomed the force outside of football that was Marcus Rashford’s push for free school meals - prompting a government u-turn.

The return to education marks a bit change for many pupils - with a new way of learning to contend with - Abi’s a physiologist from the British Psychology Society - they’re urging a continuation of the phased return to learning.

The government point to their £700 million package, focusing on an expansion of small group tutoring programmes to help kids catch up.

Gavin Williamson has also suggested his department could introduce longer learning during the summer.
