COVID BOOSTER PROGRAMME: Plans to protect the most vulnerable from the Autumn outlined

 

Booster vaccine shots are likely to be needed to bolster protection of most vulnerable.

An extra sixty million doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine have been secured by the UK to help support the booster COVID-19 vaccination programme from the autumn. The plans to protect those most at risk are explained by vaccine minister Nadhim Zahawi.

What we do know now is that - according to research from Public Health England, one dose of a coronavirus vaccine can cut household transmission by up to half.

Those who do become infected 3 weeks after receiving one dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or AstraZeneca vaccine were between 38% and 49% less likely to pass the virus on to their household contacts than those who were unvaccinated.

Medical professionals are confident that the current roadmap set out can be adhered to due to the speed of vaccinations, but they cite the importance of regular testing continuing too, as Dr Chris Morris explains.

Earlier this month, a new service was unveiled allowing those who do not currently have covid symptoms, to order sets of rapid lateral flows tests to be delivered to your front door - but the uptake appears to be slow...
