KIRKBY’S NEW STATION: GCI flythrough for new Headbolt Lane Station

More detailed plans for Kirkby’s brand new station have been released to the public in the latest round of consultation on the project.

Members of the public have been invited to comment on the proposals for the new Headbolt Lane station in an online survey that will run until June 13.

Along with the consultation, the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority has produced a CGI “fly-through” video, showing both the new station and improvements to the surrounding transport network.

Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram said: “Good public transport is vital for connecting people with each other and with opportunity. That’s never been more important than in the post-pandemic world, where we need to build back better.

“The new station is a key part of delivering my plans for an integrated, London-style publicly owned transport system for our city region. I’ll make it as quick, easy and affordable as possible to get around.

“Please take the time to have your say on our plans for the station and help us make it the best it can be.”

The new station will see Merseyrail services extended beyond Kirkby, with Northern services to Wigan and Manchester also operating from its platforms.

In future, the new station could form part of a long-promised Merseyrail link to Skelmersdale.

Cllr Tony Brennan, Knowsley Council cabinet member for regeneration and economic development, added: “I’m pleased that residents will have an opportunity to see for themselves how the new station will look, and I’d encourage our residents and businesses to share their views and help to shape this important project for Kirkby.”

A planning application for the new station is expected to be submitted in early July, with work beginning before the end of 2021 providing the application is approved.

The station is then expected to open in Spring 2023.
