NATIONAL NEWS ROUNDUP: Holiday bookings surge & face coverings to be scrapped in schools
A surge of pent-up holiday demand has been unleashed following the latest announcement on international travel.
The ban on holidaying abroad is to be lifted from 17th May, with the likes of Portugal, Malta and Israel all on the "green" safe travel list. A surge in sales have already been reported by holiday firms.
Secondary schools pupils in England may no longer need to wear face coverings from later this month. It comes as an announcement is expected from the Education Secretary however the move goes against the wishes of many teaching unions, with calls for the rule to remain until 21st June.
The single-use carrier bag charge - rising from 5p to 10p - will be extended to all businesses from 21st May. The levy on plastic bags was introduced back in 2015 and since then, their use has fallen by over 95%.
