NEWS ROUNDUP: Kim Leadbeater wins Batley and Spen By-election
02/07/21 | Batley and Spen By-election result | Labour's Kim Leadbeater has won the Batley and Spen by-election with 13,296 votes which was 323 votes more than her Conservative rival Ryan Stephenson.
She will now represent the seat which was once held by her sister Jo Cox who was murdered in 2016.
Former Labour and Respect MP George Galloway who was representing the Workers Party came third with 8,264 votes.
Sixteen candidates were vying to become the next Batley and Spen MP, with 37,786 votes cast out of the total electorate of 79,373, making the voter turnout 47.6%.
The previous Labour MP, Tracy Brabin, left the position when she became the Mayor of West Yorkshire in May.
Labour has now held the Batley and Spen seat since 1997.
