TORY ISLAMAPHOBIA INQUIRY: Anti-Muslim sentiment ‘remains a problem’ in party says report

A report set up following certain high-profile allegations of discrimination, including what is sometimes referred to as “Islamophobia”, within the Conservative and Unionist Party found that Anti-Muslim sentiment remains a problem within the party.

The report, led by Professor Swaran Singh, stated that comments by Boris Johnson in a newspaper column in 2018 likening women wearing burkas to “letter boxes” were “insensitive to Muslim communities”.

The prime minister told the inquiry that the controversial remarks were down to his “parodic, satirical” nature of political writing and said journalists “need to use language freely”.

The Party had also been accused of failure to address allegations of Islamophobia. Following discussions with the Equality and Human Rights Commission, the Party set up this Independent Investigation to consider such allegations and appointed a Chair in December 2019.
