FANS BACK: Football fans returned for the first time in months this week

Football fans returned for the first time in months this week and we were outside The Hawthorns to speak to supporters about what they have missed.

West Bromwich Albion’s relegation wasn’t enough to dampen spirits too much as fans returned for the first time in 14 months. Fans were keen to express their pleasure at being able to support their team in person once more.

It was the same up and down the country as supporters returned to grounds such as Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge and St James’ Park. The fans appeared to make a big difference at The Amex Stadium as Brighton came from behind to beat Manchester City 3-2.

‘It’s being part of a community’

Albion fans were a little emotional on being able to return even if the result didn’t go their way with West Ham United running out 3-1 winners.

Chris said, “It’s more than just going and watching a football team, it’s a family experience...it’s being part of a community.”

“I think anybody who takes it as a little thing where all you’re doing is going to a ground, watching a football match...it’s so much more than that, as I say, it’s a community experience, it’s a family experience and it’s brilliant to have it back”

Carl said, “It’s always exciting coming to the Albion and I, er, texted a friend last night and said we’re actually going to a live game...who cares about relegation? It’s that extreme.”

End of season reward

Fans of all Premier League clubs will get the opportunity to see their team live before the end of the season with this weekend’s final league game allowing the likes of Liverpool and Aston Villa to welcome back supporters.

It has been a long road of silence and those moments of glory such as Liverpool winning the 2019/20 title and Manchester City reaching the Champions League final have felt a bit empty without the adoration of thousands of people.

But finally, football fans have returned.
