Messi's contract at Barcelona expires this summer and the Catalan club are strapped for cash.
His current deal is reportedly worth over €550million - the largest contract for a sports athlete in the world.

At just 21 years of age, Donnarumma would have many suitors if he left AC Milan this summer.
Milan have offered the goalkeeper at five-year deal but his agent - the super-agent Mino Raiola - only wants a two-year contract.
If Donnarumma leaves on a free, Milan will lose one of the top prospects they have as well as missing out on a large transfer fee.
He made his debut at 16 years old and has already given Milan five years of his time.
But as long as this contract saga rolls on, he may get his apparent wish to leave.
Chelsea were rumoured to be after him in the summer and their goalkeeping situation would improve if they sign him.
Liverpool's Dutch midfielder has been clear on his wage demands which the club are yet to meet.
Wijnaldum wants £150k per week but LFC are not willing to splash that amount on a 30-year-old.
However, the club will miss out on a potential transfer fee if Wijnaldum leaves on a free.

Barcelona are rumoured to be waiting in the wings if Wijnaldum decides to leave and if Messi departs that could free up some cash to pay his wage demands.
The Austrian looks set to join Real Madrid on a pre-contract basis but it's reportedly not a done deal yet.
Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United are amongst the clubs chasing the Bayern Munich man.
Having been a left-back in his early days, Alaba has proven himself versatile and showed himself a capable centre-back in recent years.
The arrival of Dayot Upamecano at Bayern means he should slot in where Alaba departs.
He will always be remembered for THAT goal which won Manchester City the title.
Aguero has scored 180 goals in 268 appearances for City since 2011.
However, he has been blighted by injuries and only played five times so far this season in the Premier League.
It looks likely that his time at the Etihad is over but his manager has left the door open for him to earn a new deal.
He won't be able to earn anything while he is injured, so it's a waiting game for City fans to see if a club legend departs.
