LACK OF QUALITY: Newcastle in a goalless draw away at West Brom
Steve Bruce praised Newcastle United for winning an 'important' point away at 19th-place West Bromwich Albion.
The Magpies are now just one point from safety after Fulham stunned Liverpool at Anfield.
Brighton have slipped below them, however, meaning Newcastle have jumped up to 16th.
West Brom keeper Sam Johnstone denied Jonjo Shelvey and Joe Willock either side to keep the score level.
Mbaye Diagne forced Martin Dubravka into a good save from his header in arguably the Baggies best chance of the game.
It was otherwise forgettable and lacked any real quality, with a draw probably a fair outcome.
Draws aren't what Newcastle need right now though, as relegation becomes an even more serious threat following Fulham's win.
West Brom are likely down along with Sheffield United, leaving one place left.
Brighton and Newcastle are both struggling and Fulham's upturn in form will have them feeling confident.
Although both do have a game in hand on the Cottagers.
Burnley are three points ahead of the Magpies but have also played a game more. They're far from safe either.
Delighted with the attitude
Manager Steve Bruce praised his side's attitude after a week of questions regarding leaked information that he and Matt Ritchie had a bust up at the training ground.
"I was delighted with their attitude and spirit," Bruce said after the game.
"We showed real desire to get something out of the game. In terms of the problems we've had, in terms of injuries, not rows, it was important."
