PRESSURE MOUNTING: UEFA set to decide on Champions League final

UEFA find themselves under mounting pressure to move the Champions League final to England due to coronavirus related safety concerns.

The showpiece event is scheduled to take place on the 29th May in Istanbul between Chelsea and Manchester City but Turkey is struggling with its infection rate.

The country entered a 17-day lockdown on April 29th after increasing case numbers saw their infection rate become the highest in Europe.

To add to concerns about the event, Turkey was placed on the UK Government’s red list of countries.

PM Backs UK Champions League Final

Boris Johnson is amongst those calling for the final to be moved to the UK due to both teams in it being English.

The Prime Minister told The Sun: “The Champions League is the pinnacle of European club football.

"And with two English teams in the final, it would be a great shame if fans were unable to attend.

“It would be brilliant to host it here if we can. I want to help supporters of both clubs see their team in action.”

Although the PM has backed talks to move the final to England, the Government will grant clubs a quarantine exemption should the final remain in Istanbul.

Fans Unlikely To Attend Abroad

If the game was to be played at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium, fans from England would struggle to attend.

UEFA were planning to allow up to 6,000 fans from each club at the game, now scheduled to have a crowd of 25,000.

However, the cost of travel and quarantine measures will make it almost impossible for many to attend.
