WHEN IN ROME: United through to Europa League final

WHEN IN ROME: United through to Europa League final

Edinson Cavani's brace helped Manchester United advance to the UEFA Europa League final after beating Roma 8-5 on aggregate.

United were already 6-2 up from the first leg at Old Trafford last week before Cavani opened the scoring.

Fred blasted a pass towards Cavani who got the ball under control in behind the Roma defence and hammered in to make it 1-0.

Roma would pull two goals back in the second half through former Manchester City striker Edin Džeko and Bryan Cristante.

However, Cavani would strike again to make it 2-2 on the night.

An exquisite pass from Bruno Fernandes was met by the Uruguyan's head after his perfectly timed run gave him a free header.

Alex Telles was awarded an own goal late on after a shot deflected off his legs and into the United net.

Yet it wouldn't affect the result as United advanced to the final.

It's the first Europa League final since 2017 for United when they beat Ajax 2-0 in Stockholm to lift the trophy for the only time in their history.

They could have faced Arsenal to another all-English European final, but Villarreal knocked the Gunners out and will face United later this month.

Strange game of football - Solskjaer

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said the first leg result brought his side through to the final after defeat in Rome.

"It feels good. We played one very good half at Old Trafford, which brought us through," he told BT Sport after the game.

"I never like to lose a game. Especially the way we did it but it was always going to be one of these games that was going to be open, with chances for both teams.

"It could have been 6-6 or 8-6 to them! It was a strange game of football."

"Luckily, we have got one of the best goalkeepers in the world. We have a number nine who wants to score goals. Edi (Cavani) and David (de Gea) two top performances by them."

All attention turns to the Europa League final on May 26th now with United's league season looks done.

The chances of catching Manchester City are very slim and Champions League football looks to be secure.

Although, winning this trophy would give them a ticket to the competition next season anyway.

Solskjaer put to rest any complacency in the squad ahead of the final where United are favourites.

"We're in the final and we're looking forward to May 26th. It's a one-off, anything can happen but we'll prepare well."
